Self Locking Worm Gear Slewing Ring Description

A distinctive feature of the rotary worm gear drive is the feature between static self-locking and dynamic self-locking. When the startup efficiency ηA ≤ 0.5, static self-locking exists. At this time, the worm can be driven by the rotary slewing bearing. When the operating mechanical efficiency η ≤ 0.5, the helix angle γm=2.5°~4°, which can achieve dynamic self-locking (that is, automatic locking during movement), which can be achieved by relying on the contact stress and friction of the tooth surface.


In many drive systems, self-locking is very important. In general, using additional brakes or blocks is the most common method. Self-locking gears cannot completely replace the role of brakes. The rotary worm gear drive is static self-locking. In some special cases, such as earthquakes, the self-locking is still effective when there is a tendency to reverse rotation.
